Appalachian Ministries

Holy Comforter has enjoyed a relationship with Grace House on the Mountain near St. Paul in southwest Virginia for nearly ten years. Work trips to help the needy in Appalachia began first with EAM, Episcopal Appalachian Ministries. Grace House with its fully equipped kitchen, men’s and women’s bunkhouses, conference room, and outdoor chapel served as the workers’ “home away from home.” This relationship continues to this day.

In the winter of 2012, some adults, who had traveled to the Gulf Coast region to aid victims of recent hurricanes, decided to stay closer to home. Grace House was the obvious choice for a new work destination; and so, the first week of June became Holy Comforter’s adult work week in Appalachia. Over the years it became apparent that another month would work better for our team, so now we’ll be traveling to Appalachia in September.

In June 2019, our intrepid CHC team led by Susan Escobedo (along with friends from Maine and Ohio) built a 48 foot ramp with landing for a family in need. Despite pouring rain, the workers finished by the end of a satisfying and fun-filled week.

For a hard-working, but joy-filled week as Christ’s hands in the world, consider joining the team. No skills are necessary!
