Will Shaw, Verger

swillis

He is responsible for working with the flower and altar guilds to make sure everything is prepared in advance, for working with the ushers and acolytes to help direct these important ministries, and for working with the clergy to ensure the service is running smoothly.

A verger is a distinctively Anglican office which has developed over the centuries. Historically vergers were named after their symbol of office, the virge. The virge is a staff which is used to lead a procession. Literally the verger would clear the way (usually of animals and other people) for the procession. The verger is responsible for ensuring that all non-speaking parts of the service happen according to plan, in essence making sure that those leading worship and the worshipers themselves can focus and not need to worry about practical matters.
